Dana Lewis Ambrose, Lecturer at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College and Conference Chair, said the decision was taken as a result of the overwhelming response relating to the call for papers. So far, more than 140 papers have been received.

Ms. Lewis Ambrose explained further that, as a consequence of the extension for early bird registration, the new deadline for author notification is now Tuesday 31 January.

Despite the extension, delegates are still encouraged to register as early as possible. Registrants are reminded to have a copy of a photo ID attached to registration form if paying by credit card. All major credit cards are accepted, except American Express.

HLSCC is serving as host organisation for the conference, which is held every two years under the auspices of the International Small Islands Studies Association. Under the theme, "Globalisation: Islands Adapting to Change," one of the main objectives is to stimulate discourse on how islands across the globe, and in particular the BVI and the wider Caribbean, are adapting to 21st century challenges.

HLSCC Urges Early Registration for Islands of the World XII Conference

With more than 110 papers submitted for the Islands of the World XII Conference to be hosted in the Virgin Islands in 2012, prospective participants are being encouraged to take advantage of the early registration process to secure a place to attend the event.

The advice came from Dana Lewis Ambrose, Lecturer in the Business and Computer Studies Department at HLSCC and Chair of the Steering Committee overseeing the planning and preparations for the conference, slated for 29 May-1 June. "The College has already received several registrations for the conference and with, many international delegates expected, we are urging persons to register early," she said.

Registration forms are available via the link www.hlscc.edu.vg/islandsxii, and can be downloaded, completed and returned to HLSCC via email, fax or regular mail. The "early bird" deadline concludes on 31 December 2011. Credit cards, with the exception of American Express, are acceptable for registration.

Hotels have already been receiving reservations for the event, and delegates are encouraged to book early to capitalise on the special rates while rooms are still available. Large delegations are expected from South Korea and Canada based on communications and papers submitted.

Although some papers are still being sent in as late submissions, to date, 33 have received full acceptance and nine, provisional. The most popular discussion topic areas were sustainable development, history and culture, economic development, tourism, education, and health.

A special Youth Forum is being planned for 28 May at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium, targeting College and secondary school fifth form students. The theme will be, "Empowering Our Youth Toward a Healthy and Productive Future," with special focus on issues surrounding HIV/AIDS

Sponsorship for the Islands of the World XII Conference is still open. To date, confirmed sponsors are the BVI Tourist Board, Government's Department of Culture, the Office of the Governor, the Developers of Mosquito Island, Treasure Isle Hotel, and First Bank Virgin Islands.

"Overall, plans for the conference are slowly unfolding, but prospects are looking quite promising," said the Conference Chair. "Although we are in the early planning stages, there have been some major accomplishments, in particular, having a conference logo created by one of our young persons here in the Virgin Islands," she said.

The overall conference theme is, "Globalisation: Islands Adapting to Change," and will be held under the auspices of the International Small Islands Studies Association.
